INDIANAPOLIS,
Ind. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Getting
double-digit kills from three players and 54 assists from senior setter Whitney Schott (Roscoe, Ill.), visiting Green Bay (10-18, 6-8 HL) shocked league-leading
Butler (17-8, 11-2 HL) 3-1 (25-22, 23-25, 25-19, 25-23) in Horizon League volleyball
action Friday night at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
A total team effort helped the Phoenix to the
important league victory as three players notched double-digit kills, four
players tallied at least 13 digs and Green Bay hit .263 as a team for the win.
Freshman Lyndsay
Zabkowicz (Oak Creek, Wis.) led the
Phoenix with 17 kills and just three errors while Abbey Gitter
(Hortonville, Wis.) totaled 14 kills and only one error. Sophomore Carmen Leitermann (Schofield, Wis.) and junior Kelly Mischler
(Kaukauna, Wis.) added 12 and nine kills, respectively.
Schott, the team's lone senior, showed her leadership
both offensively and defensively in leading her squad to the upset. Adding to
her impressive numbers directing the offense, Schott led the Phoenix with 25
digs. Junior Karli Koralewski (Muskego, Wis.) added 18
digs while freshman Sabrina Marunowski
(Milwaukee, Wis.) and sophomore Brittany
Groth (Oak Creek, Wis.) had 17 and 13 respectively.
"We finally got over the hump," said head coach Debbie Kirch, whose team earned revenge
after losing a 2-0 lead to Butler at home on Oct. 10. "We were extremely
patient offensively, committed only 14 hitting errors and played great defense.
We stuck to our game plan, trusted it and finished games."
Things did not start off great for the Phoenix in set
one, but the visitors rallied from an early 5-1 deficit and used an 8-2 run to
break a 12-12 tie and pull away for the early lead.
After falling in a close set, 25-23, Green Bay came
away from the intermission with a strong set three. After the Bulldogs scored
the first point, the Phoenix did not trail again. Seven-straight points on the
serve of Schott put Green Bay up 24-15.
Five kills from Zabkowicz helped the Phoenix finish
the match in set four. Green Bay again only trailed 1-0 in the set and never
relinquished the lead after going ahead 2-1 on a Schott ace.
The Phoenix will travel to Dayton, Ohio, on Saturday
to play against Wright State at 4 p.m. The match will be Green Bay's last road
match of the season before returning home on Friday, Nov. 12 to host UIC.
