Green Bay Stumbles in Road Loss at Buffalo

BUFFALO, N.Y. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Green Bay (4-6) put four players in double figures Saturday afternoon, but the Phoenix was unable to overcome a second-half spurt by Buffalo (6-3) in a 78-64 loss at Alumni Arena. Senior Rahmon Fletcher (Kansas City, Mo.) led the Phoenix in scoring with 15 points.

Green Bay trailed 32-25 at the break, but freshman Daniel Turner (McCordsville, Ind.) opened the second half with a three-pointer and senior Greg LeSage (Radcliff, Ky.) capped a 7-2 run with a fastbreak dunk to cut the deficit to two (34-32) at the 18:22 mark.

Things turned for the visitors after that as Buffalo rattled off 14-straight points to move ahead by 16 points with 14:50 to play, and the Phoenix never fully recovered despite cutting the lead to single digits with three minutes to play.

Junior Steve Baker (St. Paul, Minn.) scored five-straight points to end a 7-0 run early in the opening half and give Green Bay a 12-8 lead six minutes into the contest. The Phoenix struggled from the field for much of the rest of the first half, and went into the break shooting just 29 percent (9-31).

The shooting struggles helped Buffalo go on an 11-0 spurt and build the seven-point halftime lead.

Fletcher knocked down 6-of-13 shots from the field and added six assists to lead the Phoenix. Baker added 12 points and six rebounds while Turner and senior Bryquis Perine (Milwaukee, Wis.) added 10 points apiece.

Buffalo guards Zach Filzen and Byron Mulkey both scored 21 points while Javon McCrea had 13 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Bulls.

The Phoenix will have a quick turnaround after returning to Green Bay, traveling to Madison for a non-conference tilt on Monday at 7 p.m. Green Bay downed the Badgers 88-84 in overtime a season ago. The rematch will be televised live on the Big Ten Network.
