July 12, 2010 - For
the second consecutive season, Green Bay women's basketball head coach Matt
Bollant has been selected as the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Women's
D I/II Coach of the Year.
The award comes on the heels of Bollant's third consecutive
25+ winning season and a second consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament. During the 2009-10 campaign, Green Bay became
the youngest team in program history to reach the NCAA Tournament while earning
the first ever Horizon League at-large bid. Bollant led the Phoenix to the
second round of the NCAA tournament with a thrilling 69-67 win over No. 5 seed
Virginia, the highest seed Green Bay has ever beaten in the tournament.
Under Bollant's leadership in 2009-10, the Phoenix won its
12th straight regular-season Horizon League championship, extending the
nation's longest active streak. Green Bay had its best start in program history
after a 16-0 start while picking up strong nonconference wins over NCAA
tournament teams Wisconsin and 21st-ranked DePaul, as well as
Marquette while becoming the first team in the country to win four games on the
road for the season. As a result, the Phoenix (28-5) rose as high as No. 14 in
the coach's poll during the year, the highest ranking in school history.
The awards are voted on by the WBCA Executive Board and presented
to the honorees at the 2010 Hall of Fame Banquet on Oct. 2.
