WOODBURY, Minn. -- The Green Bay women's soccer team defeated South Dakota 2-0 in an exhibition match Sunday afternoon in Woodbury, Minn., at the Beilenberg Complex. It was the final tune-up for the Phoenix before it opens its regular season this Friday.
A number of freshmen stood out for the Phoenix in the win, as newcomer Hekla Palmadottir (Akranes, Iceland) netted the first goal following a corner kick, while classmate Renee Therrien (Winnipeg, Manitoba) registered the assist. Fellow freshman Ella Bump (River Falls, Wis.) also dished out an assist in the match, finding junior Laura Hamer (Blaine, Minn.) for Green Bay's second goal.
Green Bay was able to control the game with tough defense, not allowing Coyotes to threaten the net. The Phoenix was successful on the offensive end, creating a number of scoring opportunities.
Green Bay hosts its in-state rival Wisconsin on Friday, Aug. 20 at 7 p.m. at Aldo Santaga Stadium. Green Bay is looking for its first ever win against the Badgers (0-14 all time). The match will be streamed live on GreenBayPhoenix.com in the Phoenix Flix portal -- for more information, click here.
