FARGO, N.D. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay women's soccer team
(0-1-1) dropped its first road contest of the 2010 season Friday afternoon,
falling 1-0 to North Dakota State (2-0-0) at a windy Ellig Sports Complex
thanks to a quick strike by the Bison in the game's second minute.
North Dakota State junior forward
Danielle Boldenow recorded her first goal of the season at the 1:41 mark,
finding the back of the net from 30 yards out near the top of the box. She was
unassisted on the score.
"The girls are definitely
disappointed, but I thought we played pretty well," Phoenix head coach Trevor Warren said. "They got a
fortunate goal early on, but I thought our defense played well. We had a couple
of good chances on offense that didn't go our way - we just need to work on
maintaining possession and creating some more opportunities on the offensive
end."
Wind speeds reached nearly 25
miles per hour throughout the match, making for difficult playing conditions.
"We just couldn't get anything going
with the wind," Warren said. "Nothing changes the game of soccer more than wind
- it was really tough out there today. It's windy all the time here, so the
other team was able to handle the conditions a little better."
The Bison out-shot the Phoenix
18-6 in the contest, including an 8-2 advantage in shots on goal. The host
school also held an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Green Bay junior goalkeeper Maddie Drusch (Appleton, Wis.) turned
in another solid outing between the posts, recording seven saves to follow her
eight-save shutout performance in the season opener against Drake last Sunday.
The Phoenix is back in action
Sunday afternoon when it travels to Grand Forks, N.D., to take on the North
Dakota Fighting Sioux (0-2-0) at 1 p.m.
