IOWA CITY, Ia. (GreenBayPhoenix.com)
- Despite an
exciting battle in set one, Green Bay (0-2) fell short Saturday afternoon in a
meeting with Alabama (1-1) in a non-conference volleyball match at the Hawkeye
Challenge in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Crimson Tide took set one 25-23 before
ending the match 25-8 and 25-13 in sets two and three.
For the second time in as many days, freshman Monica Anderson (Cottage Grove, Wis.)
led the Phoenix in kills, tallying eight in the match. Junior Carlie Willison (Greenfield, Wis.) totaled
six kills while fellow junior Abbey
Gitter (Hortonville, Wis.) added four kills and a .364 hitting percentage off
the bench.
"There was definitely more chemistry on the court
today, but that needs to be there for all three sets, points one through 25,"
head coach Debbie Kirch said. "Our ball control was much improved but for our
offense to work we need five hitters contributing and we did not get that. I
was pleased with Abbey Gitter's performance coming off the bench and providing
a spark."
After falling behind 4-0 and 6-2 in the first
set, the Phoenix battled back to keep it close the rest of the set. The two
teams were tied on nine separate occasions in the first set alone, and Green
Bay trailed just 24-23 after Willison and sophomore Carmen Leitermann (Schofield, Wis.) teamed up on a block.
Alabama asserted itself more in sets two and
three, hitting .500 and .387 respectively to finish off the match.
Senior Whitney
Schott (Roscoe, Ill.) led the Phoenix with 21 assists while freshman Sabrina Marunowski (Milwaukee, Wis.)
had 12 digs.
Green Bay will be back in action at the Hawkeye
Challenge Saturday, facing the host Hawkeyes at 4:30 p.m. To follow live stats
