GRAND FORKS, N.D. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay women's soccer team
(1-1-1) earned a 2-0 victory over North Dakota (0-3-0) Sunday afternoon at
Bronson Field for its first win of the 2010 campaign. A pair of Phoenix
freshmen came up big in the contest, as Anna
Kouba (Lino Lakes, Minn.) scored her first collegiate goal and Hekla Palmadottir (Akranes, Iceland)
doled out a pair of assists.
Green Bay first got on the
scoreboard in the second period when Palmadottir found junior forward Laura Hamer (Blaine, Minn.) for a score
in the 59th minute. It was the first goal of the year for the Phoenix. In the
70th minute, Palmadottir found Kouba on a corner kick, who headed the ball into
the net to put the Phoenix up 2-0.
"I was really happy with how our
team played today," Phoenix head coach Trevor
Warren said. "We did a good job of maintaining possession and creating some
good scoring chances. We were able to control the game and definitely deserved
the win."
Another highlight of the contest,
according to Warren, was Green Bay's effort on the defensive end - something that
has been a constant thus far in 2010. In three matches this season, the Phoenix
has given up just one goal and goalkeeper Maddie Drusch (Appleton, Wis.) has earned a pair of shutouts.
"It was another good team
defensive performance," Warren said. "North Dakota had a couple of chances
early, but we did a good job on that end of the field. Our defense has really
kept us in every game so far this year."
Green Bay is next in action on
Friday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. when it hosts Eastern Illinois to start a three-match
home stand. The Phoenix then welcomes Northern Iowa (Sept. 10) and South Dakota
State (Sept. 12) to Santaga Stadium.
