Volleyball Drops Pair at Bulldog Challenge

DES MOINES, Iowa (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Freshman Kara Lindstedt (Shoreview, Minn.) totaled 25 kills, including a career-high 19 against Stephen F. Austin, but Green Bay (2-7) was unable to pull out a victory in two matches Friday at the Hampton Inn Bulldog Challenge.

The Phoenix won the first two sets against Stephen F. Austin (4-6) before falling 3-2 (21-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-20, 15-13). Green Bay then lost to Drake (10-0), the tournament host, 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-16).

"We started off the day playing well in the first two sets against Stephen F. Austin, but then started playing not to lose instead of to win," said head coach Debbie Kirch. "We let the tough five-set loss carry over into our Drake match and never got into a rhythm."

Green Bay jumped out early against Stephen F. Austin, hitting .273 and .243 respectively in sets one and two to take a 2-0 advantage. The Phoenix then led 23-19 in set three before the Lumberjacks rallied for the 25-23 win. After evening the match with a set four win, SFA took the win in a back-and-forth fifth set.

Lindstedt continued her recent strong play at outside hitter, leading three Green Bay players with double-digit kills with 19. She also shared team-high honors in digs with Carlie Willison (Greenfield, Wis.) with 21 digs. Carmen Leitermann (Schofield, Wis.) had her best game of the season, tallying 13 kills and zero errors on 26 swings for a .500 hitting percentage. Junior Abbey Gitter (Hortonville, Wis.) also notched 13 kills in the contest.

Despite the loss, Green Bay's offense, directed by senior Whitney Schott's (Roscoe, Ill.) season-high 53 assists, was effective. The Phoenix totaled 63 kills and hit .215 as a team.
