Phoenix Concludes Weekend with Victory over South Dakota

DES MOINES, Iowa (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Senior Whitney Schott (Roscoe, Ill.) directed Green Bay (3-8) to a season-high .264 hitting percentage as the Phoenix concluded its weekend with a 3-1 (25-17, 23-25, 25-19, 25-18) victory over South Dakota at the Hampton Inn Bulldog Challenge Saturday evening.

In Green Bay's first match of the day, Idaho State (6-3) dealt the Phoenix a 3-1 (25-13, 25-21, 23-25, 25-16) loss despite a team-high 11 kills from junior Abbey Gitter (Hortonville, Wis.).

Schott's strong day included 84 assists, 13, digs, 12 kills and a .435 hitting percentage. She was named to the Bulldog Challenge All-Tournament team, the third-straight weekend Schott has earned a spot on an all-tourney team.

"It's good to finish off the tournament with a win especially having lost a close second set [against South Dakota]," said head coach Debbie Kirch. "Overall, I expected us to play better this weekend after the way we finished last weekend. We need to learn how to fight back when a team pushes us."

Green Bay fell behind by two sets and could not recover despite taking the third set 25-23. The Phoenix hit .314 in the second set but still fell 25-21. Green Bay was undone by 10 service errors in the match.

Gitter had 11 kills to lead the Phoenix while sophomore Carmen Leitermann (Schofield, Wis.) had eight kills and a .333 hitting percentage. Schott had an all-round performance with 36 assists, nine digs and seven kills and a .545 hitting percentage.

Green Bay 3, South Dakota 1

Freshman Kara Lindstedt (Shoreview, Minn.) had 14 kills to lead Green Bay to the victory against South Dakota. Gitter also racked up double-digit kills, collecting 10.

With five players with at least eight kills, the Phoenix had 58 kills and 19 errors on 148 swings for a season-high .264 hitting percentage. Leitermann had nine kills and Carlie Willison (Greenfield, Wis.) and Kelly Mischler (Kaukauna, Wis.) tallied eight apiece.

Brittany Groth's (Oak Creek, Wis.) career-high 28 digs led three Green Bay players with at 14 digs. Karli Koralewski (Muskego, Wis.) notched 18 digs while Lindstedt tallied 14.

"Karli, Brittany and Sabrina [Marunowski] played together as a unit," said Kirch. "Our ball control was much improved and they shows what an impact they can make as our defensive core. It will be good to finally play at home this weekend."

Green Bay will travel to Madison Friday, facing Wisconsin at 7 p.m. before hosting Milwaukee Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Kress Events Center.
