GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay women's soccer team (2-2-2) was handed
its first home loss of the 2010 season when South Dakota State's Cori Bonte
scored a goal in the final minutes of regulation to give the Jackrabbits the
1-0 win. South Dakota State moves to 3-1-2 with the victory.
"South Dakota State is a
very good team," Phoenix head coach Trevor Warren said. "I thought we started
out well against them and also did really well to begin the second half, but
we're just struggling a little in front of the goal right now. We need to get a
little bit tidier in front of the net and get some shots off like we were able
to do on Friday night (against Northern Iowa)."
After more than 87 minutes
of scoreless soccer, Jackrabbits senior midfielder Kaitlin Justice launched a
pass in the 88th minute that found Bonte on a breakaway toward the Green Bay
goal. Bonte beat Phoenix goalkeeper Maddie
Drusch (Appleton, Wis.) for her first goal of the season with a long shot
from outside the box on the right side. The goal was just the second score
given up by Green Bay's defense this season.
South Dakota State outshot
Green Bay 14-2 in the match and tallied eight shots on goal. Drusch was forced
to make five saves in the contest.
Green Bay is next in action on Thursday at
Western Illinois to begin a four-game road swing - its longest road trip of the
year. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
