MACOMB, Ill. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay women's soccer team (2-3-2) began its
four-match road trip Thursday afternoon with a 1-0 loss at Western Illinois.
The Phoenix allowed the game-winner early in the contest, as the Leathernecks
scored the lone goal in just the third minute.
Western Illinois freshman
Jordan Spaciel, a Waterford, Wis., native, got her team on the board at the
2:18 mark when she found the back of the net from eight yards out on the left
side. Sophomore Sarah Blaase recorded the assist on the goal.
Both teams created scoring
opportunities throughout the remainder of the match, but strong goalkeeping
kept both teams off the scoreboard for the final 87 minutes.
Phoenix goalie Maddie Drusch (Appleton, Wis.), who
entered the game ranked fourth in the nation in save percentage (0.943), had
another impressive performance between the posts, making 11 saves in the match.
The goal was just the third the junior has surrendered in the 2010 season.
The Leathernecks outshot
the Phoenix 14-11 in the match, including 12 shots on goal. Green Bay fired six
shots on target, forcing Western Illinois keeper Laura Atkinson to make six
saves. Sophomore Megan Braatz
(Waukesha, Wis.), the reigning Horizon League Player of the Week, led the
Phoenix with three shots, two on goal.
The Phoenix continues its longest road swing of
the season on Sunday when it travels to DeKalb, Ill., to take on Northern
Illinois at 1 p.m.
