YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Junior Abbey Gitter (Hortonville, Wis.) paced the Phoenix (4-10, 1-1 Horizon League) with 11 kills in Green Bay's 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-21) win over Youngstown State (2-13, 0-2 Horizon League) Friday night at Beeghly Center. The Phoenix finished with a season-high .317 hitting percentage.

Green Bay was without one of its stars in the contest, as junior outside hitter Carlie Willison (Greenfield, Wis.) was sidelined with an injury - an obstacle Green Bay head coach Debbie Kirch feels her team was able to overcome.

"I felt we adjusted very well to the lineup change," Kirch said. "I'm really proud of the way Abbey stepped up into a new role to have a great offensive match. Once our middle got going I thought we were able to create a strong, well-balanced attack."

After trailing 20-17 in the opening set, the Phoenix rallied to outscore the Penguins 8-1 down the stretch for the 25-21 win. In set two Green Bay jumped out to a 6-1 lead, but Youngstown State battled back to regain a 14-13 advantage. The Phoenix scored the next four points en route to claiming the set, 25-19. In the third and final set, Green Bay scored five of the last six points following a 20-20 tie to earn the 25-21 set victory.

Gitter registered a season-best .417 attack percentage in the contest, while junior Kelly Mischler (Kaukauna, Wis.) led the team with a .462 percentage, recording eight kills. Freshman Kara Lindstedt (Shoreview, Minn.) also had eight kills for Green Bay.

The Phoenix has a quick turnaround as it battles the defending conference champions Cleveland State (10-0, 1-0 Horizon League) tomorrow at 4 p.m. at Woodling Gym in Cleveland. It will be the 14th road contest in Green Bay's first 15 games of 2010.
