GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay women's soccer team (1-1-2) battled
Eastern Illinois to a 0-0 double overtime tie Friday night at a cold and windy
Santaga Stadium. It was the third shutout in four games this season for the
Phoenix.
"Overall
I was happy with the performance," Phoenix head coach Trevor Warren said. "Defensively, I thought we handled ourselves
well and I was happy to get another shutout. I think we did a good job of
controlling the game for the most part - we kept the possession of the ball
much better than we did last week."
Despite not finding the
back of the net, the Phoenix created a number of scoring opportunities late in
the game. With just over 11 minutes left in regulation, freshman defender Hekla Palmadottir (Akranes, Iceland)
found sophomore Lauren Somers
(Bloomington, Minn.) on a corner kick, who headed the ball just over the
crossbar. Then, with eight minutes remaining in the first overtime period,
freshman midfielder Ahna Logan
(Roseville, Minn.) launched a long shot into the wind, forcing Eastern Illinois
goalkeeper Kaylin Lorbert to tip the ball off the crossbar for the save.
"We've just got to keep
creating chances and be more ruthless in front of the goal," Warren said. "I
thought we definitely deserved a result in this one based on the shots on goal,
but we've just got to keep building and the goals will come eventually."
Green Bay out-shot the
Panthers 21-8 in the contest and held a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal. The
Phoenix also attempted eight corner kicks to EIU's three.
Sophomore midfielder Megan Braatz (Waukesha, Wis.) led the
Phoenix in shots with four, including one on goal. Junior forward Laura Hamer (Blaine, Minn.) shot three
times, forcing a pair of saves.
Phoenix junior goalkeeper Maddie Drusch (Appleton, Wis.) posted
her third shutout of the 2010 season Friday night. Drusch, who entered the
match as the Horizon League's leader in nearly every statistical goalkeeping category,
has given up just one goal this year.
"Maddie is having a great
start to the year and is definitely becoming one of the top goalkeepers in our
league," Warren said. "I'm really happy for her and the way she's been playing
so far this season."
Drusch was asked to make just
two saves on the night, but one turned out to be a game-saver. Panthers junior
Elise Farrelly fired a strong shot off a free kick with 7:45 remaining in
regulation, forcing Drusch to make a diving save to send the game to extra time.
The Phoenix continues its
three-match home stand next Friday when it hosts Northern Iowa at 7 p.m. at
Santaga Stadium.
