GREEN BAY, Wisc. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) -
The No. 21 Green Bay (13-1, 2-0 HL)
women's basketball team tipped off the new year on a winning note, wrapping up a
four-game homestand Sunday with a 75-57 victory over Wright State (8-5, 1-1 HL)
at the Kress Events Center. It was the 40th consecutive regular season Horizon
League win for the Phoenix on its home court.
Green
Bay jumped out to a quick lead early, breaking a 6-6 tie with a 25-6 run that
senior Kayla Tetschlag (Sheboygan,
Wis.) capped with a three-point play that gave the hosts a 31-12 lead with 6:42
left in the opening half.
"Wright
State is a very good team, and we wanted to set the tone right away," said head
coach Matt Bollant. "They have a new
coach and a lot of new kids, and we wanted to let them know right away they
were playing at Green Bay and I thought we did that in the first half."
Junior Julie Wojta (Mishicot, Wis.) scored 10 of Green Bay's first 15
points before finishing with 17 in the first half. She added six rebounds while
helping Green Bay lead 43-26 at the break. The Phoenix had scored 28 points in
the paint and 16 off of 14 Wright State turnovers in the first 20 minutes.
"Julie
was really special," said Bollant. "She did a great job. Last year she
struggled a little bit when people played behind, but today she was great at
creating angles and getting easy baskets. Our offense was really good, it was
good to put up 43 points in the first half. Defensively, we were really solid.
I am pleased with our team. We played two good teams in conference and it is
great to start 2-0."
In
the second half, Green Bay opened the second half with a 17-7 run that gave the
Phoenix its biggest lead of the night (60-31) with 14:44 remaining. Wojta
posted her third double-double of the season with 15:59 remaining in the
contest while Tetschlag posted
her second consecutive and fifth of the season with 13:21 to play.
Wojta
finished with a game-high 19 points throughout 24 minutes of action before
fouling out with 7:07 left in the game. Tetschlag finished with 15 points and
10 boards while Sarah Eichler (Grafton, Wis.) chipped in 11.
"We
knew coming in that Kayla and I could have an advantage on the perimeter, and
we ended up getting stops right away and playing good defense on [LaShawna
Thomas]," said Wojta. "She is a lot of their offense, so that led to fastbreaks
and we were able to get down the floor and get some quick layups."
Thomas
finished with a game-high 20 points, but the Phoenix defense held her to just
6-for-25 shooting and forced the Wright State point guard into 10 turnovers.
Green Bay scored 24 points off WSU turnovers and scored 20 points in the
fastbreak.
The
Phoenix finished the contest shooting 46 percent from the field (29-62) and holding
the Raiders to just 35.2 percent shooting (19-54). Green Bay had a 46-26 edge
in points in the paint and outrebounded Wright State 40-36.
Green
Bay heads to Youngstown, Ohio on Jan. 6 for its first road Horizon League
contest against Youngstown State (2-10, 0-1 HL) at 6:05 p.m. followed by a
battle against Cleveland State at 1 p.m. on Jan. 8.
