CHICAGO, Ill.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - After suffering a heartbreaking last-second loss at Milwaukee on
Wednesday, the Green Bay (4-4-1, 1-2-0) men's soccer team could not find its
rhythm as UIC's (6-2-2, 1-0-0) Ivan Stanisavljevic scored his second hat trick
of the season to down the Phoenix 3-1 at Flames Field Saturday.
Less than 15 minutes into the first half (13:35), goalkeeper Ryan
Wehking (St. Louis, Mo.) was issued a red card after denying Stanisavljevic an
obvious goal-scoring opportunity in the box. Travis Meikle (Cottage Grove, Wis.) replaced Wehking in the net and
Stanisavljevic converted the penalty kick for the 1-0 Flames lead.
With 10 players on the field, Green Bay was unable to fire a
shot or corner kick throughout the first half while UIC took five shots and had
two corner kicks.
Less than nine minutes into the second half, UIC's
Stanisavljevic scored on a give-and-go opportunity from Eric Frazier, boosting
the Flames lead to 2-0.
With 16:58 remaining in the second half, Green Bay cut UIC's
2-0 lead in half when Stuart Grable (Neenah, Wis.) served the ball on a free
kick and Andrew Stone (Green Bay, Wis.) used his height to score his first goal
of the season.
As Green Bay was gaining momentum with time winding down,
Stanisavljevic scored his third goal of the game with 3:40 remaining on a pass
from Frazier, who led the league in scoring entering the contest. Stanisavljevic
now leads the Horizon League with seven goals.
The Phoenix finished the contest with shots and four corner
kicks.
Green Bay will continue its tour of the windy city as it
faces DePaul (3-6-1, 1-1-0) Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 3 p.m. before wrapping up its
four-game road stint at Tulsa Oct. 8. The Phoenix returns home Saturday, Oct.
15 to battle Horizon League rival Butler at 7 p.m. at Aldo Santaga Stadium.
