MILWAUKEE, Wis.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - In the first
round of the 2011 Horizon League Volleyball Championship, sixth-seeded Green
Bay (11-18) won set two Friday night at the Klotsche Center in Milwaukee, but
third-seeded Butler (16-13) took sets three and four and end the Phoenix
season, 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 25-16, 25-13).
Sophomore Leah
Van Zeeland (Kaukauna, Wis.) recorded 18 kills to lead the Phoenix
while junior Brittany Groth (Oak Creek, Wis.) had 24 digs to
end her record-setting 2011 season. Groth, an All-Horizon League libero, had
656 digs on the season, setting a program record and tallying the third-most digs
in Horizon League history.
The loss ended the careers of four Green Bay seniors -
Alison Bohnen (St. Germain, Wis.), Abbey Gitter (Hortonville, Wis.), Kelly
Mischler (Kaukauna, Wis.) and Carlie Willison (Greenfield, Wis.). Willison had eight kills while Gitter
and Mischler added seven apiece.
After dropping the first set, the Phoenix went back
and forth with the Bulldogs in a tight second set that included 11 ties and
three lead changes. Trailing 14-11, Green Bay scored eight of the next 10
points to lead 19-16. Butler rallied to tie it at 19 before recorded three
kills in the next eight points to close the set.
Van Zeeland had 12 kills through the first two sets,
including seven in set two, while Groth had 17 digs, including 11 in the
second. Green Bay had 18 kills in the second set alone while hitting .222.
Butler jumped out early in set three and finished it
off, 25-16, for a 2-1 lead. The Phoenix hit just .100 in the third set while
the Bulldogs hit .353 with 14 kills and two errors. The Phoenix led the fourth set 9-8 before
Butler scored the next six points to take a 14-9 lead that it would not
relinquish.
