GREEN
BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - For the second time throughout the
month of January, the No. 21/17 Green Bay women's basketball team ranks No. 1
in the nation in free-throw percentage, sinking 80.5 percent of its shots from
the charity stripe.
"We recruit good players who want to
shoot the ball well," said head coach Matt
Bollant. "We do things at practice that most programs do but I think it's
just having the players with the mentality that they want to be there."
On Jan.
27 at Butler, Green Bay shot 100 percent from the free-throw line for the second time this season, hitting all 12 of its attempts. Green Bay sank 10 free throws in the second half including a pair
from Hannah Quilling (Eau Claire,
Wis.) with 22.8 seconds remaining to seal the 66-62 win.
"You could see it in her (Hannah) body
language late in the Butler game when she got fouled that she wanted to be
there," Bollant said. "She made two huge free throws for us late in the game."
Against league opponents Green Bay is
shooting 80.9 percent while averaging 14.1 made free throws per contest.
In addition, the Phoenix is also tied
for the best won-lost percentage (95.2) with its 20-1 record. Until Jan. 31,
Duke was the only unbeaten team in women's basketball before falling 87-51 to
Connecticut.
Green Bay will host Cleveland State Thursday, Feb. 3 (12-8,
5-4 HL) at 7 p.m. before hosting Youngstown State (3-17, 1-8 HL) Saturday, Feb.
5 at 2 p.m. for Alumni Day. For tickets to see the nationally-ranked Phoenix
