NCAA
Tournament, First Round (5) Green Bay 59, (12) UALR 55 - The first round
game of the NCAA Tournament between No. 5 seed Green Bay (33-1) and No. 12 seed
UALR (23-8) lived up to its expectations as a physical contest with Green Bay
being the tougher team in the end.
The player
that was the toughest for the Phoenix was by far Kayla Tetschlag (Sheboygan,
Wis.) who has now been given the nickname "Ms. March" because of her
performances in the NCAA Tournament. Tetschlag led all players with 24 points
and 11 rebounds in Green Bay's 59-55 win over UALR.
"The
bigger the game the bigger her performance," said head coach Matt Bollant about
Tetschlag's ninth double-double performance of the season. "Every time we
needed a big bucket or a big play, she always stepped up."
Tetschlag
poured in 10 points while grabbing five rebounds, playing the entire first half
as the Phoenix led 28-23 at the break. On the defensive end Tetschlag was
matched up against UALR standout Chastity Reed who was held to just five points
and three rebounds in the opening half.
Early in
the second half (18:13), Reed picked up her third foul as Green Bay led by four
(30-26) and Tetschlag continued to attack the basket. "I don't think her third
foul affected my decisions, we just had gotten a couple layups off our
secondary break earlier and we just continued to get it inside," said
Tetschlag. "We knew she was a scorer but we were going to try and make her
defend too."
Despite
Green Bay being outscored 9-2 in the first four and a half minutes of the
second half, Tetschlag continued to carry the Phoenix scoring Green Bay's next
eight points including a layup with 9:32 to play, giving the Phoenix its final
lead of the contest.
"We are a
really talented team so I knew my girls were right behind me and I can't
explain why I play the way I do in the tournament." Tetschlag said. "I guess I
just get those extra butterflies before the game that gets me going."
Tetschlag in the NCAA Tournament...Green Bay's game
against UALR was the second-consecutive NCAA Tournament game the Co-Horizon
League Player of the Year poured in 24 points or more. Throughout her
four-career NCAA Tournament games, Tetschlag scored a combined 83 points,
averaging 20.7 per contest.
NCAA Tournament Program Records... The Phoenix broke
one program record while UALR tied or broke five opponent records in the NCAA Tournament.
Green Bay committed only 10 fouls throughout the game for the second time this
season. The Phoenix held UALR to 23 points in the first half which is a program
low for a Green Bay opponent. In addition, UALR's four free throws, six
free-throw attempts and 28 rebounds were the fewest by a Green Bay opponent in
the NCAA Tournament while its 21 fouls tied the most by an opponent.
Team Tops the Charts... Green Bay is having
its best season in program history, winning 33 games. With its 18 assists
against UALR, Green Bay now has 687 assists on the season, the most in program
history in a single season of play. In addition, the Phoenix set a
single-season record (417) with its six steals in the contest and eight made free-throws,
totaling 507 on the year.
(5) Green
Bay (33-1) will face (4) Michigan State (27-5) in Tuesday's second round game
at 8:30 p.m. on ESPN2.
