DES MOINES, Iowa (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay women's soccer team (1-1-0) was handed
its first loss of the 2011 season Sunday afternoon on the road, as Drake
(1-1-0) scored a pair of second-half goals to earn a 3-1 victory at the Cownie
Soccer Complex.
"Today
was just one of those games where (Drake) converted on their chances and we
didn't," Phoenix head coach Trevor Warren said. "I thought we played
well to start the game and we put them under a lot of pressure toward the end
of the second half, but we were just unable to put our chances away."
The
Phoenix got off to a fast start when freshman midfielder Hannah Kernen
(Belleville, Wis.) netted her first collegiate goal just 32 seconds into the
game. Shortly after Green Bay kicked off, Kernen found the ball at the top of
the box and struck a shot past Drake goalkeeper Kalena Litch in the lower left
corner to give her team a 1-0 advantage. The goal was the fastest scored after kickoff in Phoenix women's soccer history.
Kernen has registered
a point in each of her first two college matches, as she also picked up an
assist in Friday's 2-0 victory over Nebraska Omaha.
The
Bulldogs were able to answer in the 15th minute when junior Tara Zika
redirected a shot by sophomore Generve Charles to score on Green Bay senior
goalie Maddie Drusch (Appleton, Wis.). The goal marked Drake's first of
the 2011 campaign, and the first given up by the Phoenix in the young season.
With
the score knotted at 1-1 after the first 45 minutes, Zika broke the tie in the
47th minute when she converted on a header following a corner kick by senior
Angela Chigazola. Charles then added the third and final goal in the 59th
minute on a give-and-go from Katie Helmlinger.
Despite
outshooting the Bulldogs 16-14 in the match, the Phoenix was unable to buy a
goal in the final 89 minutes. Litch saved nine of Green Bay's 10 shots on goal,
while Drusch finished the contest with seven saves for the road team. Sophomore
Renee Therrien (Winnipeg, Manitoba) fired a game high five shots for the
Phoenix, including three on goal.
The
Phoenix returns to action in Green Bay this Friday, hosting Iowa State at 7
p.m. at Santaga Stadium. The Cyclones are 2-0-0 this season, coming off wins
over Northern Illinois and Drake.
