MADISON, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) -
The Green Bay women's soccer
team (1-2-1) put forth another solid defensive effort against in-state
rival Wisconsin on Sunday, but ended up dropping a 1-0 decision at the
McClimon Complex in Madison. For the Phoenix,
it marked the third consecutive 1-0 loss to the Badgers.
Coming off a
scoreless tie against Big 12 opponent Iowa State on Friday, the Phoenix
defense once again kept the visiting team in the contest until the final
horn sounded.
"Our defense did a great job today to keep it at 1-0," Green Bay head coach
Trevor Warren said. "Wisconsin is a big, strong,
physical Big Ten team and our defense really gave us a chance to get
that one goal to even things up. We were very resilient and they had a
hard time breaking us down."
Wisconsin scored
the game's lone goal in the first half when freshman forward Cara Walls
found the back of the net in the 28th minute. After her own header
ricocheted off the crossbar, Walls came up with
the rebound and volleyed the ball past Green Bay goalkeeper Maddie Drusch (Appleton, Wis.) for the score. It was the freshman's second goal of the 2011 season.
The Badgers outshot
the Phoenix 20-4 and finished with a 7-1 advantage in shots on goal.
Walls led Wisconsin with a game high five shots, including three on
goal.
Hekla Palmadottir (Akranes, Iceland) and Hannah Kernen (Belleville, Wis.) each shot twice to lead the Phoenix.
Drusch finished the match with six saves while giving up the one goal for Green Bay. Junior
Jennifer Sturchio (Rochester, Minn.) also saw her first
action of the season between the posts for the Phoenix, spelling Drusch
for the final 20 minutes.
The Phoenix returns
to action on Wednesday when it travels to Vermillion, S.D. to take on
South Dakota at 11 a.m. CT. Green Bay then returns home to Santaga
Stadium for matches against North Dakota and North
Dakota State on Friday, Sept. 2 and Sunday, Sept. 4.
