VERMILLION,
S.D. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The
Green Bay women's soccer team earned its third shutout in five games this
season with a 0-0 overtime tie Wednesday afternoon against South Dakota at the
USD Soccer Field. The Phoenix moves to 1-2-2 with the draw, while the Coyotes
are now 0-2-1.
Coming off a pair of strong defensive performances
against Wisconsin (L, 0-1) and Iowa State (T, 0-0), the Phoenix defense once
again kept the opposition off the scoreboard, led by a 10-save effort from
senior goalkeeper Maddie Drusch
(Appleton, Wis.).
"Maddie played another great game and came up with a
couple of big saves to keep us in it," Phoenix head coach Trevor Warren said. "I'm happy with our back four to be able to shut
out another team. We now need to continue to work on converting on our chances offensively
to help out our defense."
Drusch picked up her third shutout of the young season
and lowered her goals-against average to an impressive 0.77. It was the 14th career
shutout for Drusch, who ranks second on the school's all-time list behind Barb
Singer (17.5 shutouts, 1990-93). The 10 stops put the senior's career saves
total at 325, which is just 27 behind the school record of 352 held by former
Phoenix standout Laura Sandt (1994-97).
On a day in which eight of Green Bay's 11 starters
were freshman, South Dakota edged the Phoenix in the shot column 15-14 and
finished with a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Phoenix was the only team
to shoot in overtime, firing three shots in the final three minutes, including
a shot on goal at the horn by senior Corey Arno (Winneconne, Wis.).
Freshman midfielder Abby Juzwik (Madison, Wis.) led the Phoenix with three shots, including
one on frame. Arno and sophomore Hekla Palmadottir (Akranes, Iceland) added two shots apiece for Green Bay, while Lauren
Bennett led the home Coyotes with three shots.
The Phoenix is next in action this Friday when it
returns to Santaga Stadium for a 7 p.m. meeting with North Dakota. Friday is
the annual Parents Weekend match, as the parents of the Green Bay players will
be honored before kickoff.
