BROOKINGS, S.D. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) -
The Green Bay women's soccer
team (2-4-2) opened its longest road trip of the season Friday night
with a 1-0 loss to South Dakota State (3-4-0) at Fishback Soccer Park.
The Jacks scored the game's lone goal in the 83rd
minute to break the scoreless tie and hand the Phoenix its third 1-0
loss of the season.
"For one reason or another we came out a bit flat tonight and weren't able to control the game," Phoenix head coach
Trevor Warren said. "Our defense played hard once again
and kept us in it for a long time, but we're still not putting away our
chances. We had a good talk after the game and pointed some things out,
and I think we'll be ready to go on Sunday."
With 7:24
remaining, SDSU senior forward Kayla Braffet found sophomore Abby
Jurgens all alone on the left hand side of the box. Jurgens tapped it
home for her first goal of the season, giving the Jacks a
1-0 advantage with time running down.
The Phoenix created one final chance to knot things up when
Ellen Joppe (Green Bay, Wis.) broke away down the center
of the field in the 86th minute. The freshman got off a strong shot,
but it sailed wide and the Jacks were able to hold on for the win.
The Jacks outshot
the Phoenix 17-7 and held a 5-1 advantage in shots on goal. Braffet led
all players with four shots, while five other SDSU players shot twice.
Green Bay had its best scoring opportunity in the 61st minute when freshman
Sierra Valentine (Green Bay, Wis.) fired a shot that was
saved by Jacks' goalkeeper Kat Donovan - her only save of the contest.
Valentine was one of seven Phoenix players to take a shot in the
contest.
Senior goalkeeper
Maddie Drusch (Appleton, Wis.) recorded four saves in the one-goal
defensive effort for Green Bay. Drusch is now only 17 saves away from
becoming the school's all-time leader in the respective statistical
category.
Green Bay plays
match two of its three-match road trip on Sunday against Northern Iowa
in Waterloo, Iowa. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. at the Cedar Valley
Youth Soccer Complex.
