MILWAUKEE, Wis.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Junior Carmen Leitermann (Schofield, Wis.)
tallied 13 kills and Green Bay (3-8) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead over
Marquette Tuesday night on the road, but the host Golden Eagles (8-3) posted a
3-1 win (21-25, 25-13, 25-20, 25-15) in non-conference volleyball action at the
Al McGuire Center.
The Phoenix scored five of the first six points in the
opening set and never trailed while claiming the first set. Senior Abbey Gitter (Hortonville, Wis.) had
four kills in the set and sophomore Leah Poel (Jenison, Mich.) tallied 12
assists in helping Green Bay to a .323 hitting percentage.
"I liked the way we came out of the locker room
tonight focused," said head coach Debbie Kirch. "This is the third match in a
row that we have been ready from the whistle."
Marquette quickly evened the match at 1-1 by holding
the Phoenix to a -.070 hitting percentage and winning the second set 25-13.
Green Bay fell behind early in the third set, 10-3,
but was able to close the gap midway through the set. Leitermann had an
impressive third set with four kills and zero errors on five swings.
However, Marquette closed out the third set and then
the match by winning the fourth set 25-15.
"The difference in the match was that Marquette made
adjustments," Kirch said. "We need to keep the focus that we have at the start
of matches, but also learn to make adjustments quicker during the match."
Leitermann hit .385 for the Phoenix with a match-high 13
kills while Poel finished with 36 assists in the match. Gitter posted seven
kills and four blocks while senior Kelly Mischler (Kaukauna, Wis.) added six
kills. Junior libero Brittany Groth (Oak Creek, Wis.) led Green Bay
with 13 digs.
