VALPARAISO,
Ind. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - For the
second consecutive match the Green Bay women's soccer team (2-6-2, 0-1-0) saw
its opponent score the game-winner in the opening minutes, as the Phoenix
dropped a 1-0 decision to Valparaiso (4-3-1, 1-0-0) in the Horizon League opener
for both teams Friday evening at Eastgate Field.
Similar to Sunday's contest at Northern Iowa where the
Panthers struck just 3 minutes and six seconds after kickoff, Valpo knocked in
the game's lone goal at the 1:58 mark on the fourth goal of the season by
junior Rachel Hoaglin.
"It's tough to lose the first conference match," Green
Bay head coach Trevor Warren said. "Valpo
came out in the first 25 minutes and out-possessed us and put us under some
pressure. We were able to get back into it toward halftime and it was more even
in the second half, but we really need to concentrate more on the early parts
of games."
Hoaglin's goal was chipped into the top left side of
the net past Phoenix goalkeeper Maddie
Drusch (Appleton, Wis.) from the right side of the box. Senior Brooke
Henderson and junior Catherine Terrell were awarded assists on the score.
Green Bay rallied to outshoot the Crusaders 9-7 in the
second half, but was unable to provide the equalizer. Valpo finished with a
13-11 edge in total shots, including a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal. Junior
Luisa Desario took a game high four shots for the Crusaders, while sophomore Hekla Palmadottir (Akranes, Iceland)
and freshman Devyn Alberts
(Farmington, Minn.) each shot three times for the Phoenix.
Drusch played all 90 minutes between the posts for the
Phoenix, making five saves while surrendering the one goal. The senior is now
just nine saves away from becoming the school's all-time leader in the
statistical category (352 by Laura Sandt, 1994-97).
Friday concluded a three-match road trip for the
Phoenix - its longest of the season. Green Bay is back in action Sunday at 2
p.m. against Western Illinois (5-2-0) at Santaga Stadium. The Phoenix has found
success on its home turf in 2011, owning a 2-1-1 record.
