GREEN BAY,
Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The
Green Bay women's soccer team (2-7-2) was handed its fifth consecutive one-goal
loss Sunday afternoon at Santaga Stadium, falling 1-0 to Western Illinois
(6-2-0) in its final non-conference match of 2011.
The Leathernecks knocked in the game's lone goal at
the 19:06 mark on the second score of the season by junior midfielder Miranda
Graham. Graham finished from close range on the left side following a Maddie Drusch (Appleton, Wis.) save of
a shot by WIU's Kellie Julius.
The Phoenix created a few good opportunities to knot
things up in the second half, but was unable to get past WIU goalkeeper
Victoria Kappel. Freshman Abby Juzwik
(Madison, Wis.) and junior Megan Braatz
(Waukesha, Wis.) each had shots on goal in the 60th minute, forcing a pair of
Kappel saves. In the 82nd minute freshman Hannah
Kernen (Belleville, Wis.) made a nice pass to Braatz, who fired a strong
shot that sailed just wide to the left.
Shots were relatively even, with the Leathernecks
holding a 14-12 advantage at the final horn. WIU also finished with a 7-4 edge
in shots on goal. Julius took a game high four shots to lead WIU, while four
Phoenix players shot two times apiece.
Drusch moved closer to Green Bay's all-time saves record
in the contest, making six stops. The senior now has 350 career saves and needs
just three more to surpass Laura Sandt (352, 1994-97) in the school record
books. Kappel made four saves in 90 minutes for the Leathernecks.
Green Bay has a week off from competition and is back
in action next Sunday against Cleveland State at Santaga Stadium. The match,
which is part of the team's annual Alumni Weekend, is set to kick off at noon.
