GREEN BAY,
Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The
Green Bay women's soccer team (3-7-2, 1-1-0) picked up a 2-1 win over Cleveland
State (7-4-0, 0-2-0) Sunday afternoon as part of Alumni Weekend at Santaga Stadium.
Battling steady rain and wet field conditions, the Phoenix was able to snap a
five-match losing streak and earn its first win in Horizon League play.
"We got a much needed win
today," Phoenix head coach Trevor Warren
said. "We hadn't been having a lot of luck lately and
maybe the alumni changed it around for us. It was great having them there
watching and cheering us on. It was a good time to get the win, especially in the
terrible weather conditions."
Highlighting the match was the performance of senior
goalkeeper Maddie Drusch (Appleton,
Wis.), who made five stops to become Green Bay's all-time leader in career
saves (355). She entered the contest needing just three saves to surpass former
Phoenix standout Laura Sandt (1994-97), who previously held the record with
352. The record-breaking save came in the first half when Drusch stopped a Kelcey
Fischer shot attempt at the 37:57 mark.
"Maddie just keeps teams out of the net," Warren said.
"Very rarely does she make mistakes and rarely do teams ever get more than one
goal on us, which means we're always in the game. She's had a fantastic career
so far and I'm very happy that she was able to achieve this record."
All three goals in the contest were scored within a
10-minute span in the second half, with the Phoenix striking first in the 75th
minute on a goal from sophomore defender Ahna Logan (Roseville, Minn.). Logan finished from close range after a shot by
freshman Jenna Harrington (Madison,
Wis.) hit the crossbar following a well-placed corner kick from Hekla Palmadottir (Akranes, Iceland).
It marked Logan's first goal of the season and Harrington's first assist.
"Ahna's
goal was a huge breakthrough for us," Warren said. "In these conditions we know
anything can happen and sometimes it comes down to who gets the break. It was a
big goal for us and it couldn't have come at a better time."
Green Bay tacked on an insurance goal in the 81st
minute when senior midfielder Corey Arno
(Winneconne, Wis.) drove home a header after a feed from Palmadottir on a free
kick from the left side. The goal was Arno's first of the season and fifth of
her Phoenix career, while Palmadottir picked up her third assist of the year.
The Vikings got on the board in the 85th minute when junior
Jaime Avona converted on a penalty kick, beating Drusch for her third goal of
the season. CSU attempted two more shots over the final five minutes, but couldn't
even things up to force overtime.
The Phoenix was able to earn the win despite being
outshot 18-6 in the contest. Leading the way in the shot department were CSU's Kelcey
Fischer and Natalie Daniels, who fired five apiece, while Green Bay had six
different players take one shot each. Green Bay made the most of its
opportunities, converting on both of its shots on goal. Six of CSU's 18 shots
were on target, forcing the five Drusch saves.
The Phoenix is back in action on Saturday when it
travels to Detroit to take on the Titans at 12 p.m. CT.
