MILWAUKEE, Wis.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - For the 13th time in the 34-year history of Chancellor's Cup games, the
new owner of the cup had to be decided in overtime as Green Bay (4-3-1, 1-1-0) fell
3-2 to Milwaukee (5-4-0, 2-0-0) in double overtime Wednesday at Engelmann
Field. The contest came down to the final seconds as the Panthers scored the
game-winning goal with just seven seconds remaining.
"It's certainly disappointing. It's an obvious example that
you have to play every second of every game," said head coach Kris Kelderman. "It
was a big game but there's a lot more conference games to play and we want to
finish in a good spot and be ready to go in the conference tournament."
Green Bay scored first in the 13th minute when Lawrence
Talery (Coon Rapids, Minn.) found Tony Patterson (Menomonee, Wis.) on a
sideline header pass for the 1-0 lead. The goal was Patterson's first of the
season and Talery's first assist of his career.
"We have been emphasizing our two wing midfielders to get
more involved in the attack and they have been doing just that," Kelderman
said. "Now the question is whether they can get on the end of more things."
Milwaukee answered in the 22nd minute with a free-kick goal
outside the top of the box from Nick Langford to tie it up 1-1.
Freshman Kirby Allen (Appleton, Wis.) scored his second goal of
the season in the 33rd minute after breaking free down the left side of the box,
giving the Phoenix the 2-1 lead at the break. The goal was Allen's second in
three games for the Phoenix.
In the first half, Green Bay had three corner kicks compared
to Milwaukee's one while the Panthers outshot the Phoenix 7-6.
Less than four minutes into the second half, Milwaukee's
Jamie Bladen knotted the contest after picking up a loose ball in the box and
landing it on the top shelf to make it 2-2.
With 10 minutes remaining in regulation, goalie Ryan Wehking
(St. Louis, Mo.) made a stretching finger tip save, keeping the score tied and
forcing the 13th overtime in Chancellor's Cup history.
Both teams had nine shots in the second period and four in
the first overtime period. With just under three minutes remaining in the first
overtime, Sam Krenzien (Wauwatosa, Wis.) took a header shot right in front of
the goal but was inches wide from scoring.
With 1:30 to play in the second overtime period Milwaukee had
a great look at the goal off a corner kick situation but Wehking was there for
the stretching save. The Panthers had four shots compared to Green Bay's one in
the second period of overtime.
As the clock was winding down with just seven seconds
remaining, Cody Banks scored the game-winning goal for the Panthers off a
last-second volley which came off a header pass from Keegan Ziada, stunning the
Phoenix.
"We just didn't play to the end. They played a good ball in,
we got beat and they got a free shot on goal," Wehking said. "We had chances,
we could have finished them in the first half, we had a couple of mistakes that
could have been prevented they took their chances so I guess we'll just see
them later on in the season."
Wehking finished with seven saves on the night while Allen
led the Phoenix with seven shots, three on goal and one goal.
Next Up: Green Bay will play at UIC (5-2-2) Oct.
1 followed by DePaul Oct. 5 before wrapping up its four-game road stint at
Tulsa Oct. 8.
