GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay women's soccer team (2-2-2) remained
unbeaten at home Friday night with a 3-1 victory over North Dakota (2-2-0) in
front of 365 fans at Santaga Stadium. Sophomore forward Hekla Palmadottir
(Akranes, Iceland) was involved in all three Phoenix scores, while freshmen Jenna Harrington (Madison, Wis.) and Abby Juzwik (Madison, Wis.) tallied
their first collegiate goals in the win.
"I
was really pleased with our performance tonight," Green Bay head coach Trevor Warren said. "We came out flying and ready to go. We just seemed to be
quicker, more aggressive and our thought process was great. I just really enjoyed
watching the performance of the players out there. It was a lot of fun to
watch."
Green
Bay got on the board early when Harrington found the back of the net in just
the eighth minute of the contest. The freshman defender headed one past Sioux
goalkeeper Kristi Hestdalen from inside the box following a well-placed ball on
a free kick by Palmadottir.
"It
was important to get off to that fast start with Jenna getting the early goal,"
Warren said. "I'm happy she was able to get her first goal at Green Bay. It was
a great header, which is one of the major strengths of her game, and that
really just got us off to a great start."
The
Phoenix made it 2-0 heading into halftime when Palmadottir found Juzwik from
close range with a pass from the left side in the 38th minute.
"Right
before halftime is always a good time to score," Warren said. "It was also nice
to see Abby score her first college goal, and more importantly it made us
fairly comfortable getting the 2-0 lead."
Green
Bay dominated the possession and the shots in the opening 45 minutes,
outshooting the Sioux 14-5 at the break.
North
Dakota came out strong in the second half, however, cutting the Phoenix lead to
one with a goal in the 61st minute. Sioux forward Rachael Loomis picked up her
third goal of the season on a header following a pass from midfielder Jaymie
Jackson.
Green
Bay was able to respond nine minutes later when Palmadottir added an insurance
goal at the 69:30 mark. Freshman midfielder Hannah Kernen (Belleville,
Wis.) found Palmadottir on a breakaway, who fired a left-footed shot from
straight on that sailed over the North Dakota keeper's head and into the top of
the net.
"Hekla
is just a quality player," Warren said. "She does things with the ball that not
a lot of other players can do - the little flicks and spins - and if you give
her half a chance with her left foot she'll make you pay. She's just so clever
with the ball and it was good to see her have another great night."
Palmadottir,
who registered a game high five shots against North Dakota, now leads the
Phoenix with eight points on year, totaling three goals and two assists.
All
three goalkeepers on the Phoenix roster saw playing time on Friday, as senior Maddie Drusch (Appleton, Wis.) played the first 45 minutes, while junior Jennifer Sturchio (Rochester, Minn.) and freshman Katy Pilarzyk (Madison,
Wis.) split time in the second period. Drusch was forced to make just one save
in North Dakota's scoreless first half. Sturchio made three saves while
allowing the one goal in 30 minutes between the posts, while Pilarzyk stopped
one shot in her first college appearance.
Warren
used the contest as an opportunity to get all of his available players some
valuable playing time, as 20 players spent at least 15 minutes on the pitch
Friday night. In addition, nine Phoenix players took a shot in the match.
The
Phoenix finished the contest with a 21-11 advantage in shots, including a 10-6
edge in shots on goal. The home team also held an 8-1 advantage in corner
kicks, as Green Bay created a number of scoring chances off of set plays.
Green
Bay returns to action on Sunday, playing host to North Dakota State (2-1-0) at
noon at Santaga Stadium.
