North Dakota State Hands Green Bay First Home Loss

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Playing its third match in five days, the Green Bay women's soccer team (2-3-2) dropped a 1-0 decision to North Dakota State (3-1-0) Sunday afternoon at Santaga Stadium. The loss marked the first at home for the Phoenix in 2011 (2-1-1).

"I think we gave them a lot to handle," Green Bay head coach Trevor Warren said. "North Dakota State is a good team that went to the NCAA playoffs last year and I thought we looked like the better team for most of the first half. It was tough playing our third game of the week and I think we lost our legs a little bit as the game went on."

Green Bay came out strong in the first half, firing six of the team's 10 shots in the opening 25 minutes. Sophomore forwards Hekla Palmadottir (Akranes, Iceland) and Renee Therrien (Winnipeg, Manitoba) each had shots that were on frame in the early going, but Bison goalkeeper Kalani Bertsch made two of her three saves in the first half to keep the Phoenix off the board.

It was in the 35th minute that NDSU scored the game's lone goal when junior forward Brooklyn Dyce headed the ball past Phoenix goalkeeper Maddie Drusch (Appleton, Wis.) following a corner kick by senior defender Abbey Moenkedick. It was Dyce's first goal of the season and Moenkedick's first assist.

Green Bay nearly knotted things up with six minutes to play when freshman midfielder Hannah Kernen (Belleville, Wis.) launched a shot that sailed just over the crossbar. Kernen finished with a game high four shots, including one on goal.

The Bison outshot the Phoenix 14-10 in the contest and held a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal. Three players - Moenkedick, Morgan DeMike and Kaylee McDonald each shot three times to lead NDSU.

Drusch finished with five saves for the Phoenix, which increases her career total to 331. The senior needs just 22 more stops to surpass former Green Bay standout Laura Sandt (352 saves, 1994-97) and become Green Bay's all-time leader in the statistical category.

Sunday was also Parents Day at Santaga Stadium, as parents of the Phoenix players were recognized in an on-field ceremony prior to kickoff.

Green Bay is next in action on Friday when it travels to Brookings, S.D. to take on South Dakota State at 6 p.m. The match begins a three game road trip for the Phoenix, as it then heads to Northern Iowa on Sunday, Sept. 11 before opening Horizon League play on Friday, Sept. 16 at Valparaiso.
