DAYTON, Ohio (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Despite
shooting a season-low 37.7 percent from the field, the No. 14/12 Green Bay (14-0,
4-0 HL) women's basketball team handed Wright State (11-6, 4-1 HL) its first
Horizon League loss of the season with a 68-50 win over the Raiders Thursday at
the Nutter Center in Dayton, Ohio. With the win, Green Bay ties the program's
regular season record winning streak with 34 consecutive wins.
Reigning Horizon
League Co-Player of the Week Julie Wojta (Francis Creek, Wis.) once again had a
career night, this time grabbing a career-high 17 rebounds. Wojta also poured
in a game-high 22 points, posting her eighth double double of the season in the
win while leading all players with seven steals. Junior Adrian Ritchie (De
Pere, Wis.) chipped in a season-high 19 points, sinking four three pointers for
the Phoenix.
"When we
think the ball is going inside she comes around and grabs the rebound," said
Ritchie of her Wojta's performance. "She's so dominant down on the post, she
never settles, scores over two defenders and that's why she's such a huge
factor to this team."
Wright State
jumped out to an early 6-0 lead, its largest of the game, before Wojta sank a
three to put the Phoenix on the board. At the 13:04 mark, Ritchie sank a three
from the right wing to give Green Bay the 16-12 lead before Bauer stole the
ball on the defensive end and Ritchie converted the layup on transition for the
six point advantage (18-12).
After a Wright
State timeout, Molly Fox cut the Phoenix lead back to four (18-14). Senior
Hannah Quilling (Eau Claire, Wis.) later found Lydia Bauer (Lake Zurich, Ill.)
on the right wing for a three with 10:31 to play, giving the Phoenix the 23-14
lead which was part of an 11-0 run. Five different players scored in the four
minute run as Green Bay's defense forced the Raiders' to turn the ball over six
times during the span with its Buzz defense.
Wright State broke
its four minute scoring drought with 7:35 to play off a bucket down low from Fox
to cut Green Bay's lead to 29-16. Green Bay's largest lead of the half (17)
came with 4:02 to play when Quilling hit a pull up jumper in the lane to boost
its lead to 35-18.
Green Bay's
defense forced the Raiders' a season-high 19 turnovers in the first half while
scoring 20 points off Wright State's miscues. Wojta posted her double double in
the opening half with 11 points and 10 rebounds while Ritchie led all scorers
with 13.
The second half
started much like the first for the Phoenix. Wright State scored the first five
points before Wojta hit her second three of the game from the top of the key at
the 16:31 mark. Green Bay shot 1-for-9 from the field in the first six minutes
of the second half as both teams combined for nine points. Wojta again broke
Green Bay's three-and-a-half minute scoring drought with a jumper to boost its
lead to 44-29 with 12:46 to play.
Ritchie sank her fourth
three of the game with 7:14 to play, giving her a season-high 19 points. Green
Bay's defense forced a Raiders' turnover and Sarah Eichler (Grafton, Wis.)
answered with a three of her own to boost the Phoenix lead to 20 (58-38).
Freshman Megan Lukan (Barrie, Ontario) capped a late 8-0 run by Green Bay with
a layup and its biggest lead of the contest (22) with 6:06 to play.
Green Bay's
defense held Wright State to a season-low 50 points while forcing a season-high
31 turnovers, converting to 33 Phoenix points.
Kim Demmings led the Raiders with 18 points while Fox posted a double
double pouring in 16 points while grabbing 11 rebounds.
UP NEXT: Green Bay will wrap up its road trip
Saturday at Detroit as it battles the Titans at Calihan Hall at 1 p.m. The
Phoenix returns home Thursday, Jan. 19 as it hosts Youngtown State at 7 p.m. at
