GREEN BAY, Wis.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay
(4-9-1, 1-2-1 HL) women's soccer team was dealt a 2-0 home loss on a blustery
night at Aldo Santaga Stadium by in-state rival Wisconsin (8-5-1, 1-4-1 B1G).
The win gives the Badgers a 16-0-0 record all-time against the Phoenix.
The match was even to start, with seven minutes
elapsing before the first shot of the game was recorded. Wisconsin's Kinley
McNicoll got the Badgers' first goal on the night, scoring an unassisted goal in
the 12th minute from 25 yards out. The shot carried in the wind just over the
outstretched arms of goalkeeper Katy
Pilarzyk (Madison, Wis.) to give Wisconsin the early 1-0 lead.
Paige Adams tallied her fifth goal of the year for
Wisconsin after intercepting a pass from Pilarzyk in the 31st minute. With
Pilarzyk out of the goal, Adams was able to send a slow-rolling shot from 20
yards out into the back of the net.
Head coach Trevor
Warren started Nastacia Behle (St.
Paul, Mo.) in goal for the second half, who turned away all three of the
Badgers' shots on goal she faced. Despite being pinned on its own end of the
field for the majority of the second half, Green Bay's defense, comprised
entirely of underclassmen, was able to prevent Wisconsin from adding a third goal.
Following a free kick late in the game, Elise Olson (Madison, Wis.) was able to
block a rebound attempt from point-blank range on what would've been an easy
goal for Wisconsin.
"We have a very young defense, and I thought they
played outstanding against a very tough Wisconsin team. Our whole team played
very well tonight, and if we play like that going forward we'll probably win
our next three conference games," Warren said.
The Badgers held a commanding advantage in both shots
and corner kicks, out-shooting the Phoenix 21-4 and posting eight corners Green
Bay's one. Pilarzyk and Behle each posted three saves on the night for Green
Bay.
Green Bay will have next week off, and return to
action Oct. 19 when the team hosts conference rival Milwaukee. Kickoff against
the Panthers will be at 7 p.m.
