GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) -
Though former Green Bay women's basketball All-American Julie Wojta (Francis Creek, Wis.) will not be donning a Minnesota Lynx uniform during
regular season play, the 18th overall draft pick has inked a contract with
Eurocup team Dexia Namur Capitale in Belgium. The 6'0" forward was waived by
the Lynx after competing for a roster spot during its two week training camp
which included two preseason games.
"I knew I was walking into an extremely tough situation as far as making
the roster but I'm still very competitive and wanted to make the most of it. I'm
so thankful to have the experience attending the Lynx training camp. I loved
the experience and can take a lot away from it," Wojta said. "Coach Reeve was
very complimentary and told me she wishes she had a spot for me but it's tough
with only 11 roster spots. She told me I belong in this league eventually, so
that was encouraging to hear."
Wojta is
expected to clear waivers in the 48 hour timeframe, making her an unrestricted
free agent with the opportunity to sign with another WNBA franchise. However,
with the regular season tipping off May 20, there is a very small chance and
window of opportunity for Wojta to join another WNBA team.
"I'll
certainly talk with other teams but the chances of her going elsewhere are
slim," said Wojta's agent Eric Wiesel. "In the WNBA it's very rare that a
player is waived and picked up by another team."
In September
Wojta will travel to Belgium where she will join Dexia Namur and compete in
round-robin type of play, competing in multiple countries throughout the
season. Wojta will be coached by Daniel Goethals who coached the Belgian Women
U20 National Team and was named Coach of the Year.
"I think it
will be good for her, Coach Goethals really wanted her and Julie will grow not
only as a player but also as a person," Wiesel said.
"I'm excited
to play for a coach that's intense and successful as he is," Wojta said. "I'm excited to go over there and experience something completely different
than I did at Green Bay while traveling bit. "
