GRAND FORKS, N.D. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Phoenix (2-4) was right in all three sets, but
the hosts from North Dakota (3-2) earned the 3-0 sweep (25-23, 25-21, 25-21)
Saturday afternoon in Green Bay's second match of the UND Classic at the Betty
Engelstad Sioux Center.
The Phoenix drops to 1-1
in the UND Classic following Friday's
3-2 win over Stephen F. Austin, while UND improves to 2-0 in its home
tournament after defeating South Dakota 3-0 yesterday. Green Bay will play its
final contest of the tournament today
at 5 p.m. CT against South Dakota.
A block by junior Monica Anderson (Cottage Grove, Wis.) gave
the Phoenix a 23-21 advantage in the opening set, but UND rallied to take the
final four points - capped off by two of Emily Asche's team-high 11 kills - and
steal the 1-0 lead.
Green Bay led again late in
set two, holding a 19-18 edge following a UND service error, but that's when the
home team went on a 4-0 run to move ahead 22-19. Freshman Taylor Kasal (Downers Grove, Ill.) had a pair of late kills to get
it to 23-21, but back-to-back points by UND closed out the second set 25-21.
The Phoenix battled back
from a 21-11 deficit in set three to get it to 22-20 after kills by Lyndsay Zabkowicz (Oak Creek, Wis.) and
Leah Van Zeeland (Kaukauna, Wis.),
but Ronni Munkeby added two kills of her own to give UND a match point opportunity
at 24-20. A Phoenix service error ended the set (25-21) and the match.
Anderson and Zabkowicz had
12 kills apiece to lead all players. Brittany
Groth (Oak Creek, Wis.) posted another high dig total with a match-high 25,
while Leah Poel (Jenison, Mich.) had
a double-double with 32 assists and 12 digs on her 20th birthday.
UND out-hit the Phoenix
.233 to .174 on the day and held a 45-40 advantage in kills. North Dakota also edged
Green Bay in assists (42-40) and blocks (6-3), while the Phoenix bested the
home team in digs (70-66).
Following the UND Classic,
the Phoenix returns to action next weekend at the South Dakota State Jackrabbit
Invitational in Brookings, S.D. The Phoenix will face the host Jackrabbits on
Friday at 7 p.m. and wrap things up on Saturday against Bradley at 1 p.m.
