DETROIT, Mich. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - After
taking a 1-0 lead early in the second half, the Green Bay (2-3-1, 0-1 HL) men's
soccer team wrapped up its four-game road swing falling 2-1 at Detroit (3-4-0,
1-0 HL) in its Horizon League opener Friday, Sept. 14 at Titan Field.
Green
Bay opened the first period outshooting Detroit 7-1 but both teams remained
scoreless at the break.
Less
than three minutes into the second half, junior forward Sam Krenzien
(Wauwatosa, Wis.) scored the first goal of the contest off a corner kick from Whitney Browne (Brooklyn Park, Minn.). The header goal was Krenzien's first of the
season and Browne's first assist.
Less
than two minutes later, Green Bay was called for a foul which resulted in Detroit's
Adam Bedell scoring the equalizing goal on a penalty kick.
Late
in the 51st minute, Krenzien fired one of his team high three shots but was too
high off the mark.
Detroit
grabbed control offensively and took the next three shots. In the 57th minute
Bedell found Matt Harkema in the far corner for the eventual game-winning goal.
Both
teams finished the game with nine shots each with Detroit earning one more (4-3)
corner kick than Green Bay. Krenzien, William Donovan (St. Charles, Mo.) and Ahmad
Bad (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) all led the Phoenix with three shots a piece.
NEXT ON THE SCHEDULE... For
the first time since Aug. 31 Green Bay returns to Aldo Santaga Stadium Tuesday,
Sept. 18 where it hosts SIU-Edwardsville at 7 p.m. Sept. 21-23 Green Bay is
back on the road and will head to Oregon for the Oregon State Tournament.
