GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - After
trailing 2-0 with less than eight minutes remaining in the game, the Green Bay
(2-7-1, 0-2-0 HL) men's soccer team battled back before falling 2-1 against
Wright State (3-6-1, 1-0-1 HL) Saturday, Sept. 29 at Aldo Santaga Stadium.
Wright
State's first goal came with 58 seconds remaining in the first half when Brett
Elder found Derek Zuniga on the right side of the box for the 1-0 lead at the
break.
Green
Bay had its closest look at the goal in the first half with 2:25 remaining when
Ahmad Bah (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) took a shot from the top of the box but was
high over the goal.
The
Raiders outshot the Phoenix 5-2 in the first half of play while Green Bay
goalkeeper Ryan Wehking (St. Louis, Mo.) made two saves.
During
halftime of the game, all Green Bay men's and women's soccer alumni present
were recognized, including former Horizon League Players of the Year JC Banks
(2009) and Tony Walls (2011).
Green
Bay's intensity picked up in the second half and in the 55th minute, Green Bay's
Alonso Flores found Whitney Browne (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) off a free kick in
the box. Surrounded by defenders, Browne took the shot but just missed on the
fight side.
In
the 72nd minute, Senior Alonso Flores (Chicago, Ill.) took a shot through the
Wright State defender but slightly missed to the left of the goal.
Three
minutes later, Zuniga found Elder on top of the box for the 2-0 advantage.
The
remaining 15 minutes of the game Green Bay controlled the ball, outshooting
Wright State 3-0. In the 83rd minute Bah found Flores
on the doorstep of the box. After a battle with the Raiders' goalkeeper, Flores
was able to score the lone goal for the Phoenix.
Green
Bay had a chance to equalize the game with 1:35 on the clock when Browne took
the free kick but landed the ball inches over the cross bar.
The
Phoenix outshot Wright State 12-8 in the game while the Raiders won the corner
kick battle 4-3. Bah and Flores led all players with four shots each while Sam
Krenzien (Wauwatosa, Wis.) and Browne each added 2. Wehking finished the night
with three saves for the Phoenix, including a diving save in the 73rd minute.
NEXT ON THE SCHEDULE... Green
Bay will have three days rest before it hosts in-state Horizon League rival
Milwaukee (4-4-0) Wednesday, Oct. 3 in a battle for the Chancellor's Cup at 7
p.m. at Aldo Santaga Stadium.
