GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – In what turned out to be a heated and highly contested affair, the Green Bay men's soccer team finished in a 2-2 draw with Milwaukee on Wednesday night at Santaga Stadium. The positive result means the Phoenix will hold on to the Chancellor's Cup for another season after defeating Milwaukee last year.
The Phoenix (3-3-3, 0-0-1 Horizon League) had to battle back to earn the draw after trailing 1-0 early and later behind 2-1, following a red card handed to Green Bay in the 73rd minute. Playing down a man with less than four minutes remaining and still trailing, the Horizon League's leading scorer Audi Jepson (Green Bay, Wis.) converted on a free kick to tie the game at 2-2 in the 87th minute
Jepson stepped up and precisely buried the free kick from about 15 yards out, leaving Milwaukee's keeper leaping to no avail as his ninth goal went into the back of the net. The goal would prove to be the last in the game, as the two squads would play even through both overtime periods resulting in a draw.
The visiting Panthers (3-5-2, 0-1-1 Horizon League) received two goals from Reid Stevenson, scoring in the 58th minute and the 80th minute to lead his team. Green Bay outshot Milwaukee by a final total of 5-3 on goal.
Senior Lawrence Talery (Coon Rapids, Minn.) took advantage of a penalty kick opportunity in the 68th minute, after he was taken down just inside the box after trying to maneuver past a Milwaukee defender. The goal is the first for Talery this year and brought the large Phoenix crowd back to life.
The match was very heated on the field, with both teams playing at an intense level with the Chancellor's Cup on the line. A total of 25 fouls were called with three yellow cards and two red cards handed out in the game.
The draw marks the sixth time in the past seven years that Green Bay has earned a positive result against Milwaukee and has now done so in three-straight matches. It's also the fifth-straight game played between the two schools that has gone into double overtime.
Green Bay will look to build off its strong start to the conference season when it visits Oakland on Saturday (Oct. 4) for a 6 p.m. CT kick off.
