Swimming and Diving Teams Compete in All-Wisconsin Invite

By: Stephen Wagner

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay swimming and diving teams hit the road yesterday in order to compete in the Wisconsin Collegiate Invitational. Although the meet was not scored and there were no decisive winners, the Phoenix had some strong performances in the meet.

The Phoenix began the day with some success as a team by winning the 200-yard medley relay in 1:33.45. Senior Ryan Korslin (Rudolph, Wis.) added on to the success of the Phoenix and touched the wall in first-place twice for the Phoenix, starting with a win in the 100-yard breaststroke after tying his season-best time of 58.40. Korslin's second win of the meet came later in the day when he won the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing with 2:11.09. Freshman Zack Parkin (Middleton, Wis.) claimed victory in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 53.19. Senior Ben Loeffelholz (Dubuque, Iowa) added his own victory to Green Bay's win tally after touching the wall in first-place in the 50-yard free with a time of 21.42. Freshman diver Michael Klemm (Rockford, Ill.) finished second in both the one-meter and three-meter diving events yesterday. Klemm's one-meter score of 306.4 points surpassed the qualifying cut of 300 points necessary to earn him a berth in the NCAA Diving Zone D competition in March. Junior Willem Poelmans (Hasselt, Belgium) added his own victories to the team-tally yesterday after winning the 200-yard IM with a time of 1:56.81 and later cruising to a win in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:06.80. Freshman Brian Borden (Brookfield, Wis.) added on to the success of the Phoenix and won the 200-yard backstroke for the second-straight meet with a time of 1:55.36. Bringing the total to nine victories on the men's side, freshman Alec Rutkowski (Dubuque, Iowa) won the 200-yard fly with a time of 1:58.55.

Junior Racheal Weiland (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) continued her winning ways and claimed two individual victories in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.67), and 200-yard free (1:55.12). Sophomore Alyssa Udean (Lino Lakes, Minn.), touched the wall first in the 200-yard fly with a time of 2:08.34. Sophomore Crystal Franzwa (Winona, Minn.) was ripping her dives in the one-meter competition yesterday and earned a score of 282.9, nearly breaking Lauren McGraw's Green Bay team record of 283.8 from 2010. The women's team ended the meet on a high note by winning the 400-yard freestyle relay in a time of 3:33.52.

Both Phoenix squads return home next Saturday for dual against Wright State in Green Bay, Wis., at 12 p.m.
