MILWAUKEE, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay newcomers accounted for 28 of the team's 35 kills on Friday night, including 12 in a set two victory, but preseason favorite Milwaukee (8-8, 3-0 HL) claimed a four-set victory (25-18, 23-25, 25-10, 25-15) in Horizon League volleyball action at the Klotsche Center.
After dropping the opening set, Green Bay battled in a set two which featured 14 ties, but found itself trailing 22-19. Sophomore Megan Powers (Glendale, Ariz.) sparked a Phoenix rally with two kills and finally a game-ending block to even the match at a set apiece. Powers finished the second set with four kills on seven swings without an error.
Milwaukee took control of the third set with a 9-1 spurt and never looked back in taking the lead. In the fourth, the Phoenix rallied from an early deficit, but the Panthers again pulled away and finished the match.
Freshmen Abby Jeffcoat (Racine, Wis.) and Taylor Totka (Racine, Wis.) each tallied nine kills to lead the Phoenix, while Powers, a sophomore transfer, added seven kills and five blocks.
Green Bay (2-12, 0-3 HL) continues its road trip next weekend, playing at Youngstown State (Friday, 7 p.m.) and Cleveland State (Saturday, 4 p.m.).
