GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – In a highly-entertaining and competitive match at the Kress Center, Green Bay got 11 kills from sophomore Shannon Hurley (Connellsville, Pa.), but visiting Cleveland State pulled out a four-set victory (25-17, 25-20, 21-25, 25-23) in Horizon League volleyball action.
All four sets throughout the match were tied at 10-10, but in three of the four sets Cleveland State used a spurt midway through the set to claim an advantage. The Vikings took the opening two sets 25-17 and 25-20 to lead 2-0 entering intermission.
Cleveland State looked to be headed towards a sweep when it claimed an 18-16 lead in the third, but the Phoenix rallied to tie the set four times before winning the final four points. Sophomore Megan Powers (Glendale, Ariz.) sparked the Phoenix with five of her nine kills in the third set.
With Hurley totaling early kills, Green Bay jumped out to an early 7-2 lead in the fourth set before CSU won eight of the next 10 points to grab the lead. The two teams were tied at 16-16 before the Vikings won five-straight points. Green Bay closed to 24-23 late after saving two match points, but a kill from Christina Toth ended the match.
In support of Hurley and Powers, freshman Lydia DeWeese (Columbus, Ohio) and Beth Kuske (Germantown, Wis.) as well as junior setter Emily Riese (Fond du Lac, Wis.) added six kills apiece. Riese hit .429 and directed the offense with 34 assists.
Defensively, junior libero Jillian Bauer (Verona, Wis.) tallied a match-high 27 digs while DeWeese, Hurley and Powers each totaled four blocks.
Green Bay is back in action on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m., hosting Youngstown State in the home finale for the Phoenix.
