Green Bay Routs Cleveland State for Two-Game Lead

By: Andrew Gavin (@GBGavin)

CLEVELAND, Ohio (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Visiting Green Bay (21-5, 11-2 HL) jumped out to 16-2 lead and held a 20-point lead 12 minutes into Saturday afternoon's game at Cleveland State (18-10, 9-4 HL), and the Phoenix got 18 points each from Alec Brown (Winona, Minn.) and Keifer Sykes (Chicago, Ill.) en route to a 68-54 win in Horizon League men's basketball action at the Wolstein Center.

With the victory, Green Bay ended the Vikings' seven-game winning streak and extended its lead in the Horizon League standings to two games over Cleveland State and Valparaiso. The Phoenix hosts Valpo on Thursday night at 7 p.m. at the Resch Center.

Brown scored 42 points this weekend as the Phoenix swept its Ohio road trip against Youngstown State (71-40) and Cleveland State for the second-straight season. Green Bay has won eight of its last nine Horizon League road games, including a 5-1 record this season.

On Saturday, Brown set the tone for the Phoenix, scoring nine points during the 16-2 spurt to start the game. Green Bay extended its lead to 20 points (27-7) eight minutes into the game, took a 32-19 lead into the halftime, and led by as many as 23 points in the second half.

Cleveland State entered Saturday's game as the nation's top three-point shooting team but made just 5-of-23 shots from long range against Green Bay. Meanwhile, Brown made 3-of-4 triples and the Phoenix ended the game 6-of-11 from beyond the arc.

Getting six points from junior Greg Mays (Chicago, Ill.), Green Bay opened the second half on a 10-2 run to extend its lead to 42-22. The Phoenix lead was 57-36 with 7:36 to play before Cleveland State scored 12 points to make things interesting. Green Bay scored the next seven points to put the game away.

Sykes scored 18 points on 3-of-8 shooting from the field and 11-of-14 from the free-throw line. With 161 free throws made in 2013-14, Sykes broke his own single-season program record. Mays finished with 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field.

The nation's second-leading shot blocking team had 10 blocks on Saturday, extending its Horizon League record to 195. Freshman Kenneth Lowe (Little Chute, Wis.) had a career-high four blocks while sophomore Jordan Fouse (Racine, Wis.) blocked three shots and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
