MACOMB, Ill. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Sophomore Gene Kiela (Plymouth, Wis.) paced the Phoenix as the Green Bay men's golf team opened its spring season at the Beu/Mussatto Invitational hosted by Western Illinois. The 54-hole tournament was played on the par-72 Harry Mussatto Golf Course in Macomb, Ill.
Green Bay finished the tournament in 11th place out of 13 teams with a 54-hole team total of 963 while Bradley claimed the tournament title. Chicago State's David Keenan was the individual medalist at 3-over par 219.
Kiela finished in a tie for 30th place after rounds of 77, 81 and 79 while senior Dan Ozga (Edgerton, Wis.) was second on the squad two strokes back in a tie for 38th (79-79-81=239). Junior Tom Boockmeier (Green Bay, Wis.) recovered from an opening round 87 to card scores of 80 and 75. Boockmeier fired a 31 on the closing nine holes of the tournament on Tuesday and finished in a tie for 44th place.
Junior Chad Bonis was fourth on the Phoenix in a tie for 65th (83-81-86=250) while freshman Joe Du Chateau (Fond du Lac, Wis.) was fifth in 70th place overall (83-85-85=253).
Green Bay will be back in Illinois this weekend to compete in the Bradley Invitational on Saturday and Sunday at Weaver Ridge Golf Course in Peoria, Ill.
