ROCHESTER, Mich. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Senior Hannah Kernen (Belleville, Wis.) scored a beautiful goal in the 17th minute, but host Oakland (3-8-1, 1-1-0 HL) scored once early and once late on Saturday evening and posted a 2-1 victory over visiting Green Bay (6-3-2, 0-1-0 HL) in the Horizon League opener for the Phoenix.
Oakland got on the on board early with a fourth minute goal scored by Claudia Krupicz, her second of the season.
The Phoenix applied pressure offensively in an effort to equalize, and in the 17th minute Kernen found the ball at her feet at the top of the box. The All-Horizon League performer drilled a perfect strike that caromed off the crossbar and into the net for her fourth marker of the year.
The two teams remained tied at 1-1 for nearly the next 60 minutes, but the Golden Grizzlies scored the eventual game-winner when Vlad Gurovski found open space on the right side and used a strong shot to beat Phoenix keeper Nastacia Behle (St. Paul, Minn.) to the far post.
Green Bay outshot Oakland 14-13 and Behle made four saves in the contest, which ended a four-game unbeaten streak for the Phoenix.
Head coach Kacey Burke's team will finish a brutal stretch of seven of eight games away from home on Saturday, Oct. 4 at Wright State before returning home on Wednesday, Oct. 8 to host Milwaukee at 7 p.m.
