Senior Duo Sends Green Bay to Fifth-Straight Win

By: Andrew Gavin (@GBGavin)

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Seniors Greg Mays (Chicago, Ill.) and Keifer Sykes (Chicago, Ill.) led the charge on Sunday night as Green Bay (14-3, 3-0 HL) closed out a big day in Titletown with an 82-67 win over visiting Youngstown State (9-10, 0-4 HL) in Horizon League men's basketball action at the Resch Center. Green Bay remained perfect at home and in league play and also extended its winning streak to a season-high five games.

Mays had the best game of his senior campaign, finishing with a season-high 23 points and adding eight rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots. Sykes ended an incredible week on the hardwood with 24 points, nine rebounds, six assists and two steals and went past 1,800 points in his career in the process.

Leading Green Bay to double-digit wins over Wright State, Milwaukee and Youngstown State, Sykes scored 86 points on the week, averaging 28.7 points on 53.6 percent shooting from the field (30-56) and 50 percent from long range (9-18). He has added five rebounds and 4.8 assists per contest.

Mays and junior Carrington Love (Milwaukee, Wis.) helped the Phoenix jump out to a quick start in the opening half on Sunday, combining for 19 points as Green Bay led by eight on three occasions, including 10-2 just three and a half minutes into the game.

YSU responded and tied the game at 29-29 with 2:09 left before halftime, but the Phoenix scored the final five points to lead 34-29 at the break. The run continued into the second half as Green Bay got quick buckets from Mays and junior Jordan Fouse (Racine, Wis.).

After five points from the visiting Penguins closed the margin to 38-34, the Phoenix put the game out of reach with a 19-2 run that made it 57-36 with 12:52 to play. Sykes, who scored 19 of his points after halftime, totaled 10 points during the spurt.

With sophomore Kenneth Lowe (Little Chute, Wis.) pulling down a career-high 11 rebounds, Fouse grabbing 10, Sykes adding nine and Mays tallying eight, Green Bay had a dominant 51-28 edge on the glass. Senior Alfonzo McKinnie (Chicago, Ill.) added five of the team's 20 offensive boards.

Love reached double figures for the eighth time in the past nine games, tallying 14 points. Fouse stuffed the stat sheet once again, adding six points, four assists, four blocks and two steals, and McKinnie chipped in with nine points despite playing just 18 minutes.

Green Bay heads to Michigan this week for a pair of road games, playing at Oakland (Thursday, 6 p.m.) and Detroit (Saturday, 2 p.m.). Both games can be watched on ESPN3.
