GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay men's swimming and diving team wrapped up the weekend at the Butler Invite yesterday, grabbing a second-place finish and scoring 518.33 points in the six-team invitational.
There were numerous strong performances on the day, with eight finishes inside the top three, including two individual wins from freshmen Alec Rutkowski (Dubuque, Iowa) and Brian Borden (Brookfield, Wis).
Rutkowski touched the wall first in the 100 back (51.60), besting the 23-competitor field by almost a full second. Rutkowski was also a member of the 200-yard medley relay quartet along with Ryan Korslin, Zack Parkin and Casey Murphy. The relay finished the medley in third place and turned in a 1:33.88, scoring 32 points for the team.
Borden's individual crown came after touching the wall in 1:54.87 in the 200 back, edging Southern Illinois' Grant Alef by less than half a second.
The men's squad had a great day on the boards, claiming four finishes inside the top three. Sean Leverton (Blaine, Minn.) led the way for Green Bay in the 1-meter competition, grabbing himself a second-place finish with 305.3. Tanner Nordlund (Rice, Minn.) claimed third place in the 1-meter with 289.35 and set a personal best in the 3-meter dive with 308.7. Michael Klemm (Rockford, Ill.) had a tremendous day in the 3-meter event, claiming second place with a personal best of 334.3. On the heels of Klemm and having a record day himself was James Wise (Chilton, Wis.). Wise scored his personal best in the 3-meter with 325.9 and qualified for the NCAA Zone meet this March.
Both squads welcome in-state rival Milwaukee to the Peter F. Dorschel Natatorium next Saturday, Jan. 31 for a 1 p.m. start time.
