MILWAUKEE, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay men's soccer team was in Milwaukee, WIs., for its annual Chancellor's Cup match this evening, taking on Milwaukee at Engelmann Stadium with aspirations of returning to Green Bay (4-5-3, 2-1-2) with the cup for the third-consecutive year. Senior Cheenuj Shong saw to it that Green Bay boarded the bus with the same trophy it brought only hours prior to the match, as the midfielder netted two goals to defeat the Panthers 2-0 and retain the Chancellor's Cup.
Milwaukee (3-7-2, 1-3-1) went on the offensive in the early stages of the match, firing off the first four shots from either team within the first 15 minutes of play. One of Milwaukee's best scoring opportunities came in the 11th minute after the ball was driven through Green Bay's box and found its way to the head of a Panther who then centered the ball into a packed box. Junior goalkeeper Kyle Ihn saw the play developing and emerged from the box to catch the ball in the air and eliminate the Panthers' hopes of getting on top early.
Green Bay's first scoring strike of the evening came in the 24th minute from the foot of Cheenuj Shong. The senior midfielder found himself with the ball at the top of the box and worked to create space from the defenders. After a few touches, Shong was free and fired at the goal, beating the keeper to the right for his second goal of the season.
In the final minute of the first half, the Panthers were awarded a free kick from 30 yards out. The Phoenix defense took formation and managed to turn away the final scoring attempt of the half, allowing Green Bay to head to the locker room holding a 1-0 advantage.
Head coach Jeremy Bonomo's Phoenix got off to hot start in the second half of play, with Shong making his presence known once again at Engelmann Stadium in the 47th minute of play when the junior took a combo pass with his back to the goal, followed by a quick turn before firing into the back of the net for his second goal of the game.
Milwaukee outshot Green Bay 17-8 through the 90 minutes of play but couldn't get many quality looks at the Phoenix net and only finished with four shots on-goal on the night.
Shong finished the game with two shots, both of which found their way into the back of the Panthers' net. Junior Audi Jepson and freshman Vincent Nguyen finished the match with one assist apiece, while Ihn recorded his second-straight shutout and finished the match with four saves.
The Green Bay defense recorded its fourth-straight shutout in league play and has not let a goal score from a Horizon League foe since September 20.
The Green Bay men's soccer team will have two days off before returning to the field for competitive action, as the Phoenix welcomes Oakland (4-6-1, 1-2-1) to Aldo Santaga Stadium this Saturday at 7 p.m. to continue Horizon League play.
