CLEVELAND, Ohio (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Visiting Green Bay (17-5, 6-2 HL) fell behind early on Saturday afternoon at Cleveland State (13-10, 7-2 HL) and never could recover, losing to the Vikings 76-62 in Horizon League action at the Wolstein Center. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak in the series for Green Bay.
Cleveland State used a 16-0 run to turn a 9-8 lead into a 25-8 margin midway through the first half. Green Bay ended the half with a 13-7 spurt to close to 32-21 at halftime. Senior Keifer Sykes (Chicago, Ill.) was limited to just two points in 14 minutes in the half due to foul trouble.
Green Bay scored the first six points of the second half and trailed just 37-31 five minutes into the half after a Sykes putback dunk. Cleveland State responded with a 9-0 run to increase its lead to 15 with 12:32 to play.
The Phoenix cut the margin immediately back to single digits with an 8-1 spurt, but CSU again responded and held a double-digit lead the rest of the way.
Junior Carrington Love (Milwaukee, Wis.) led four Phoenix players in double figures with 14 points. Senior Greg Mays (Chicago, Ill.) added 13, Sykes chipped in with 11 and freshman Daeshon Francis (Indianapolis, Ind.) scored a career-high 10 points off the bench.
Trey Lewis (25 points) and Anton Grady (24 points) combined for 49 points on 17-of-30 shooting to lead the Vikings.
Green Bay returns to action on Monday night at Wright State, playing the Raiders at 7 p.m. CST. In the first meeting between the two teams, the Phoenix claimed a 78-55 win to open Horizon League play.
