GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Five Phoenix seniors were honored on Saturday afternoon as the Green Bay men's and women's swimming and diving teams welcomed league-foe Milwaukee to the Peter F. Dorschel Natatorium for their annual Senior Day meet.
Both squads turned in several strong performances against the in-state rival, with the Phoenix splitting victories against the Panthers on the day. For the first time in six years, the men's squad prevailed 160-140 over Milwaukee, while the women's team fell 168-132 this afternoon.
Senior Ryan Korslin (Rudolph, Wis.) had a great day in the pool, picking up two individual victories on the day in the 100 back (57.31) and the 200 back (2:08.97). Korslin's success didn't stop there; he also aided the trio of Alec Rutkowski (Dubuque, Iowa), Zack Parkin (Middleton, Wis.) and Ben Loeffelholz (Dubuque, Iowa) to a victory in the 400-yard medley relay, with the quartet touching the wall in 3:24.12, good for a new Green Bay pool record.
Parkin also went on to have individual success in the meet following the record-setting relay, winning the 100 fly and breaking his own freshman record with a time of 49.53. Parkin also went on to break the freshman record in the 100 back, which was broken earlier in the meet by Rutkowski in the 400 medley relay, touching the wall in 50.68 for a first-place finish.
Rutkowski's time as the 100-back freshman record holder may have been short lived, but that did not stop him from claiming an individual victory in the 200 fly (1:53.68), with teammate and senior Evan Miller (Wausau, Wis.) following closely behind for a second-place finish (1:56.77).
Senior Casey Murphy (Sun Prairie, Wis.) stepped up in a big way on Senior Day, winning the meet's tightest event, the 50 free. The seven-competitor field had six athletes finish within a mere half-second of one another, with Murphy leading the way and touching the wall in 21.20.
Sophomore Haley Lucas (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) had a fantastic day in the pool for the Phoenix, claiming two individual wins on the day in the 100 fly (59.16) and the 200 fly (2:30.00). Lucas was also a member of the quartet that helped get things going for the Phoenix this afternoon, assisting Emily Gomez (Burlington, Wis.), Autumn Roepsch (Dubuque, Iowa) and Natalie Neuwirth (Stevens Point, Wis.) to a victory in the 400 medley relay.
Green Bay will return to action next weekend when both teams head to Madison, Wis., to take on the Badgers in a dual meet at the UW Natatorium on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 11 a.m.
SENIOR DAY: Green Bay recognized four men and one woman in a pre-meet Senior Day ceremony on Saturday afternoon. The 5-member senior class consists of: Taylor Crain (New London, Wis.), Ryan Korslin (Rudolph, Wis.), Ben Loeffelholz (Dubuque, Iowa), Evan Miller (Wausau, Wis.) and Casey Murphy (Sun Prairie, Wis.).
