GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Lexi Weitzer scored a career-high 16 points and the Green Bay women's basketball team bounced back in a big way on Saturday afternoon, dominating Cleveland State 74-50 at the Kress Center.
Green Bay (18-4, 8-1 HL) was gifted Weitzer's best game of her young career in the victory and shot its highest field goal percentage (53.8 percent) at home this season in the victory. The Phoenix outscored Cleveland State (13-9, 5-4 HL) 43-3 in bench points and 38-18 in the paint, thanks in large part to the performance of the sophomore Weitzer.
Fellow-sophomore Mehryn Kraker hit a three-pointer just eight seconds into the game, giving Green Bay an early 3-0 advantage and a lead it would never give back. The Phoenix led for all but eight seconds in the game, leading wire to wire while Kraker went on to finish with 14 points and four assists.
Alle LeClaire came up big off the bench for Green Bay, scoring 13 points in a 4-for-6 shooting effort. LeClaire hit a big three-pointer late in the first half, giving her team some much-needed momentum heading into halftime.
The Phoenix did commit a season-high 24 turnovers in the game, but also dished out 22 assists led by senior guard Megan Lukan who finished with a game-high seven assists. Cleveland State, meanhwhile, recorded just five assists and was forced into 21 turnovers.
Lukan turned up the defensive pressure in the second half, guarding the ball from end line to end line. She coaxed Cleveland State into a technical foul at one point and even grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
Jessica Lindstrom added eight points off the bench, while Tesha Buck and Mariah Monke each finished with six.
The Vikings were led by Cori Coleman who finished with a game-high 23 points and seven rebounds.
Green Bay returns home next Thursday (Feb. 12) when it welcomes second-place Wright State to the Kress Center for a 7 p.m. tip time.
