Green Bay Escapes Detroit with 52-51 Win on Senior Day

By: Joey Daniels (@GBPhoenixWBB)

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Leading by as many as 20 points, the Green Bay women's basketball team escaped visiting Detroit after its three-pointer at the buzzer was off the mark on Saturday afternoon at the Kress Center.

Green Bay (25-4, 15-1 HL) was able to celebrate Senior Day with its closest margin of victory this season, sending off seniors Ellen Edison and Megan Lukan with another home win. Despite the senior day recognition that took place postgame, both seniors and Green Bay will play at least one more game at home when it hosts the winner of No. 8 seed Milwaukee and No. 9 seed Valparaiso on Tuesday (Mar. 11) night at 7 p.m.

The Phoenix led by 10 at the under-four media timeout, but saw the Titans (12-17, 7-9 HL) knock down three 3-pointers in the last 1:38 of play to cut the lead to one. With Green Bay up one and Detroit electing not to foul with a six second shot clock differential, GB missed a layup before the Titans' Rosanna Reynolds desperation three missed the mark.

With Detroit shooting 32.7 percent (17-for-52) in the game, Green Bay set a new Horizon League and program record for field goal percentage defense in a season, holding its opponents to a .317 shooting clip.

Two players reached double figures for the Phoenix, led by Mehryn Kraker's 10 points and eight rebounds. Tesha Buck finished with 10 points and six assists. Lexi Weitzer and Kaili Lukan each chipped in six points in the winning effort.

All nine players dressed scored for Green Bay, marking the fourth consecutive game all dressed players tallied at least a point. Green Bay led for 35:50, taking the lead it would never relinquish at the 15:55 mark of the first half and leading the duration of the game.

The one-loss conference record marks the 11th time since 1998-99 that Green Bay has finished the conference season with one or fewer losses.

Top-seeded Green Bay will now prepare for the 2015 Horizon League Tournament. For more information, be sure to visit the 2015 Horizon League Tournament Central page.
