Green Bay Drops Home Opener Against St. Mary's, Falls 3-0

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Green Bay played host to St. Mary's (Calif.) this afternoon, welcoming the Gaels to Aldo Santaga Stadium for Green Bay's (0-3-0) home opener. St. Mary's (2-0-1) controlled a large portion of the match, netting two goals in the first half, followed by a single goal in the second period to put any hopes of a Green Bay revival to rest.

St. Mary's first strike came almost immediately after the start of play, as the Gaels' Samantha Dion had the ball played to her in the middle of the box from teammate Valerie Laforge, allowing Dion to head one past the keeper.

The Gaels capitalized on two more scoring attempts later in the match, with Hannah Diaz scoring in the 27th minute and Mary Fraser finding mesh from a header in the 71st minute.

Freshman Kelly Kent (DePere, Wis.) received the nod at goalkeeper for the Phoenix and showed promise in one-on-one situations, picking up eight saves in the contest despite allowing three goals.

Green Bay will return to action in one week's time, making a trip to Grand Forks, N.D., for a match with North Dakota on Friday, Sept. 4 at 4 p.m.
